Bob, Thanks for posting a portion of R.T. Smith's letter of 26 Sept. 1986 to Milt Miller of the 14AF Association. It was very informative and offered us more insight into the controversy within the 14AF Assn., and the reasons why Tex Hill (a former 23FG commander, 14AF) resigned from the 14AF Assn. over their insistence of claiming the name "Flying Tigers".

In your Forum posting of 15 April 2012 you say: "R.T. gave me a copy of a letter from Bob Scott"

Bob, it would be very informative for the many readers at this AVG Forum if you could scan & post that letter from Col. Robert L. Scott to R.T. Smith. This sounds like a key historical link and we would like to see it. Also, it would be a valuable document for use by the Flying Tigers Assn.....Thanks!

Ed can be seen in the well-known photo of several "Adam & Eve" pilots (Bond, Brown Rosbert, Leibolt, Louis "Cokey" Hoffman & others) huddled around squadron leaders Sandell (1st) & Olson (3rd) plus Col. Chennault next to a map on the ground.

Did the Chinese bury the unidentifiable remains of the American pilot?

<![CDATA[Ed Leibolt]]> http://www.forums.flyingtigersavg.com/index.php?tid=420&tpg=1#p2094 For years I have had a theory about what happened to Leibolt. I
Leibold was on a mission to strafe Moulmein, Burma (now occupied by the enemy) with 6 others on February 26, 1942 from Rangoon. He never returned, and there was a search for him fir one hour. It is 87 miles from Rangoon to Moulmein. A month later on March 24 Bob Neale led a flight of 6 from Kunming, on a retaliatory raid to Chiengmai, Thailand. After the raid they headed for headed for home. That’s when Billy McGarry’s plane, being hit had to bale out. The next is an excerpt from the first AVG book, “The Flying Tigers, “ by Russell Whelan, 1942.
“...The ‘revenge’ strafing of Cheingmail had been achieved at a bitter cost. What happened to ‘Black Mac’ McGarry the Tigers were never to learn. The Japs did not broadcast a report of this capture. Weeks later Chinese searching parties ground a body of an American pilot at a point on hundred miles from where a Tomahawk had crashed. Positive identification was not possible.”
Rangoon is 173 miles from Moulmein to Chiengmai. In my mind it is very possible for him to be at that location where the Chinese found and “American” pilot.
I came to my conclusions with the help of Olga’s Journal, Whelan’s book and the help of the mileage charts of the aforementioned mileages.]]>

<![CDATA[Use of Flying Tiger name]]> http://www.forums.flyingtigersavg.com/index.php?tid=269&tpg=2#p2093 ROBERT T. SMITH

Van Nuys, Ca 91405

26 Sept., ‘86
Milt Miller,
New York, NY 10009

Dear Milt Miller:

(Forum members: I am only printing the last 2 paragraphs of R.T. Smith’s letter)

. . . As for your, and the 14th AF Association’s, continued insistence on calling yourselves Flying Tigers, I wonder how you people would feel if the situation were reversed. I believe that you would feel the same resentment that we of the AVG do, particularly since it was only after the war ended that you decided to capitalize on that unique name that had been conferred on the AVG. Some of your own outstanding leaders recognized the difference; General Chuck Stone tried his best many years ago to dissuade the 14th Air Force association from calling themselves Flying Tigers. Others estimable former members of the CATF and the 14th AF have taken pains to dissociate themselves from the Flying Tigers; Genera John Alison, Bruce Holloway, and Robert L. Scott are names that come to mind. Recently I received a letter from Scott after he had read my book, and among other things he said, “R.T., I agree with you . . . I think you real members of the AVG — REAL FLYING TIGERS — who let me fly guest missions with them — should own that name FLYING TIGERS solely. It. And of course there are several of our own AVG alumni who distinguished themselves in the CATF and/or 14th AF, such as Tex Hill, Chuck Older, and Ed Rector, who have strong feelings about outfit earned that unique title. Unfortunately, all have been shouted down by a voluble group of diehards in the 14th who represent thousands, many of whom are honest enough to admit that your position is pure bullshit.

If you believe in the fairness doctrine, Milt, I trust - that you will publish - this letter in its entirety. Meanwhile, thanks again for your nice comments about my book; I’ve received quite a number of orders as a result, and thus far there have been no unfavorable comments.
