Our family has been searching for information about our father for the last 40yrs.  He passed away in 1970 and was always elusive about his past.  He would mention on occasions that he was with the Flying Tigers and we remember seeing a picture of him in front of a Flying Tiger Aircraft wearing an "Ike Jacket".  He also said he could speak Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish, & English.  If anyone can provide us with any information regarding our father we would be grateful.

Hello Mr. Santiago,

I checked the complete CAMCO roster which is found in this website.  It lists all of the people who were contracted to work for CAMCO as members of the American Volunteer Group.  Your father does not appear on this list so most likely he served later.

The key element is the timing.  The AVG served until disbandment on 4 July 1942, when the 23rd Fighter Group (US Army Air Force) of the China Air Task Force took over the mission of the AVG.  Later, the 23FG was absorbed into the much larger 14th Air Force.

Note:  the AVG, 23FG and 14AF all flew P-40 aircraft with the famous shark-mouthed insignia.  Also, all were commanded by Claire Lee Chennault.  The name FLYING TIGERS originated with press descriptions of the tenacious flying of the AVG....this was quickly picked up by the international press.  Also, the Walt Disney studios designed the famous Flying Tiger logo for the AVG which you can see at the top of this page.  The 23FG and 14AF had different logos.
As a matter of fact, the 14AF is still active as a US numbered air force (missiles)
and their logo is the same as their original one in the 1943-45 China Burma India Theater of Operations.

If you have any records which indicate when your father served, this might reveal in which organization(s) he served.

I hope that this info. will be of some help to you.
Best wishes,
Tripp Alyn
