It is widely believed that each pilot was assigned an aircraft and that was the only one he flew. While that may have been in place in the beginning of their time in China, it unraveled as the aircraft were wrecked, destroyed, or disabled for some reason. Therefore, whoever was on duty when the alert or assignment came up, went to the available planes. Sharing was not a term they used ... more like get into the plane that's running and no one else is claiming it.
Dick Rossi flew several different plane numbers during his time in combat with the AVG. One time when he took Charlie Bond's plane into combat (Charlie was off duty at the time), he brought it back with bullet holes in it. Charlie liked to give Dick a bad time about getting bullet holes in his airplane.
