Hi----

1. Which AVG members are buried at Arlington Ntl. Cemetery?
(besides Claire Chennault, Ed Janski & James Howard)

2. What was the breakdown between Army, Navy, Marines
for the 100 AVG pilots?

Any help greatly appreciated....thanks!

Ed Rector is another. Here's a link to a listing of Ed Rector at an unofficial Arlington website. Although 'unofficial', it does a nice job of honoring our veterans. As I recall, it used to have photos of Gen. Chennault's grave, among other notables. http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/efrector.htm Here's the page for Jim Howard. http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/jhoward.htm Here's Gen. Chennault's page. http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/clchenna.htm

In addition to the aforementioned Chennault, Howard, Janski, and Rector, I know of Noel Bacon, Greg Boyington, George McMillan, Charles Mott, Don Rodewald, Joe Rosbert, and Gail Stubbs. You can find the location of their graves (and search for other names) at the VA's Grave Locator website here.

As for the service breakdown of the 100 pilots recruited, my research indicates that there were 54 from the Navy, 39 from the Army (one of whom, AJ Baumler, was prevented from joining the AVG before the outbreak of the war) and 7 from the Marines. There were an additional 10 Army pilots recruited by CAMCO to serve as CAF flight instructors who are included in the roster of the AVG.

Hope this helps.

I'm trying to learn where Maax Hammer served after graduating from Advanced Flight Training at Kelly Field (San Antonio, TX) in May, 1940 with Class 40-E (along
with AVG pilot David Harris).

After receiving his commission in the US Army Air Corps, Maax most likely reported
for type training. R.T. Smith's book indicates that Maax and Ed Liebolt were P-40
pilots from "somewhere in the east."

I'm looking for info. on that period of May, 1940 to approx. May-June, 1941 when Maax was recruited for the AVG. Also, was he recruited by Skip Adair? Where?
Any help greatly appreciated....thanks!

Inscriptions on Gen. Chennault's grave marker in Arlington National Cemetery.

1. Commander of "Flying Tigers" AVG, CATF, 14AF
2. Medals awarded
3. "Tomb of Gen. Chennault" (in Mandarin)

After thinking about it, last time I tried to upload photos, I had problems too......Still having problems. As a test, I just tried to upload a photo of John S. Chennault's marker at Arlington. Only 180kb, well under the limit....Perhaps that option/ability has been 'turned off'.

There were approx. 9 experienced P-40 pilots recruited by Skip Adair out of the 8th Fighter Group at Mitchel Field, NY. Does anyone know any of their names? Or their squadrons?

Latest info. indicates my cousin, Maax Hammer, was one of the P-40 pilots from the 8PG at Mitchel Field, NY. Parker Dupouy, Ed Liebolt, Peter Atkinson, Dave Harris, Neil Martin, Arvid Olson, Duke Hedman, Bob Brouk, Bob Little & Charles Sawyer may all have come from the 8th (although Adair recruited 9 pilots, which is less). Erik Shilling had been with the 8th PG much earlier than spring '41.

Chuck Baisden, Joe Poshefko & Ed Stiles are all from the 8thPG---any more info?
Thanks.

Found a mention of Sgt. Joe Jordan being recruited by Adair at that location, but he became a finance clerk.

Does anyone know if the first AVG training base, at Keydaw Airfield, is now the
Taungoo Airport in Kaytumati, about 5 mi. NNW of the town of Toungoo?
Thanks.

My question was generated by a review of the Google map satellite view of the
Toungoo area. It is the only airport in the entire area. Like Namsang, it is the only
12,000 ft. runway in all of Burma (Myanmar). Like Namsang it is an air base HQ of
the Myanmar Air Force, ie. not a commercial airport.

With this in mind, I'll rephrase my question----was the Keydaw Airfield (1st base of
the AVG) approx. 5 mi. NNW of the town of Toungoo? Replies appreciated.
