First stab at this web site, not sure what I am doing.

Anyway, my Dad was good friends with Chennault and the "lady", and Tigers such as Rossi and Hill. He was sent over there at the request of Claire thru Don Berlin (designer of the P-40) to show newbees the finer points/survivability of a P-40, how to escape and how to gun fight with a Zero and maybe win, utilizing the few superior characteristics of the 40. He was low key, just got the job done. He went on numerous missions.

Prior to that assignment, back in Buffalo, by mid 1941 he had flown dozens and dozens of individaul P-40s. It was a requirement that each one be flown for one hour prior to acceptance, by the purchasing country. Reason: make sure all basic instrumentation worked and that the Allison would not throw a piston, all control cables functioned and the wings would not seperate from the fuselage. Afterall, in combat with real bullets you do not have time to take it back to the dealership. His favorite test was to take one to 20,000, strain the engine upward, then go inverted, throttle full forward, and nose it over, loosing 10,000 feet or more at 500mph+. He knew it was almost impossible to tear a P-40 apart in a dive, which was a HUGE advantage over the Zero. He knew the operating parameters of that airplane and almost ever rivet. He imparted his experience on those courageous young fellows over there with knowledge they could not possibility have.

My Dad has now been gone for nineteen years, not sure anyone in the organization is still around that remembers him.

Just wanted to say Hello.

Widow of AVG pilot J. R. Rossi
Hello and welcome to the AVG forum.
I remember meeting your father at a reunion in Ojai, California. He was the guest speaker at the CNAC banquet.
I had never heard about your father being on numerous missions with the AVG, in fact I never heard that he was over in China with them at all.
Interesting news to me. Thanks for letting us know.
