Another Tiger has departed and "headed west".

David H. Harris of the HQ staff died peacefully on Dec. 4th in the company of his family.  Our condolences to Nancy and the entire family.

Dave graduated from Advanced Flight School in Class 40-E at Kelly Field (with my cousin, Maax Hammer) and was one of the 99 pilots transported to the Far East in mid-1941 as members of the American Volunteer Group.  Following the fatal crash on the airfield at Toungoo, Burma of Dave's best friend, Peter W. Atkinson, on Oct. 25, 1941 he asked Col. Chennault to be relieved of flying duties.  Dave was reassigned to the HQ staff and honorably fulfilled the terms of his contract.  Dave never lost his love of flying.....

There are now six known living Flying Tigers.

We are saddened to learn that Nancy Harris, widow of AVG pilot David Harris, just passed away only a few days ago in Michigan.

We learned this from her son, Peter Atkinson Harris.  Pete was named for Dave's best friend, AVG pilot Peter William Atkinson (killed in a training accident on Oct. 25, 1941 at Kyedaw Airfield, Toungoo, Burma).  Following the disbandment of the AVG Dave Harris returned to flying and flew as a test pilot for Republic Aircraft on Long Island, NY.....with his AVG buddies Ken Jernstedt & Parker Dupouy!

We send our warmest thoughts and condolences to the Harris family.
